Monarch of the Glen was a BBC TV drama series featuring the exploits of an impecunious and somewhat dysfunctional Highland family in their efforts to keep the estate of Glenbogle going. The series originally starred the cast in the picture on the left - Richard Briers, Susan Hampshire, Hamish Clark, Alastair Mackenzie, Dawn Steele and Sandy Morton. The programme ran for seven series, from 2000 to 2006, becoming the longest running non-soap drama every run by the BBC, beating Ballykissangel by one series. The series was filmed around Badenoch and Strathspey - mainly in the Laggan, Newtonmore and Kingussie area, and Ardverikie House, on the far shore of Loch Laggan, away from the public road, became Glenbogle Castle. Ardverikie is itself a grand Scottish Estate which, through time, has faced many of the problems that underpinned the stories of the series itself. |
| As the series
developed, Molly MacDonald, played by Susan Hampshire, pictured left, was
given an increasing role as an artist and the series producers asked David
to become the 'ghost painter', creating the works which would feature
throughout the series. Many of the works created are still available as
limited edition prints - although with runs of only 200, some have already
completed and many of those now on the site are nearing the end of their
runs. When you come to look at the pictures in the galleries, you will see an asterisk by the side of each which was actually painted specifically for the programme. Businesses in the area created a web site to go with the idea of Monarch of the Glen Country and there is more information also available on the Newtonmore Community Web Site - if you click on the bbc tv link below you will be taken to the BBC's Monarch web site, which is still available - and you will arrive at the page which features David's role in the series. |
